One of James Cameron’s best films before Avatar.
This is just a great Sci-Fi movie. I remember watching it as a kid and just being mesmerized. They went all out on the cast and production. If that wasn’t enough, it transferred really well to HD.

    ‘The Abyss’
A team of deep sea drillers are commandeered by the US Navy and ordered to investigate a signal coming from an abyss at the bottom of the ocean.A wonderful film with groundbreaking special effects and a plausible romance subplot. Both Ed Harris and Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio are underrated actors and their relationship is believable and heartbreaking.Due to a clash of heads between James Cameron and the BBFC regarding censorship, ‘The Abyss’ is unavailable on 4K in the UK.

    Great film. Beautiful transfer.
So glad they finally gave this a proper release on blu-ray! The James Cameron-supervised and approved 4k transfer looks IMMACULATE! They also corrected the end credits on one of the versions. For some reason i cannot remember they had to crop or enlarge the credits for the home video release and slowed them down because they were moving too fast for the font size. I forget the specifics but if you compare the DVD release (if you have it) you’ll notice that one is 4 or 5 minutes longer. In any event this was a great flick that was hell to make for the cast. I, along with many other fans no doubt, appreciate their sacrifice in bringing this late 80s masterpiece to life.

    Fantastic Deep-Sea Encounters!
One of the best, if not the best, underwater science fiction films. I remember the first time I saw the Abyss as an amazing big screen experience in 1989. It is even better in 4K UHD Blu-ray with bigger sound and brighter colors. The visual special effects of aliens living deep in the ocean are out of this world (pun intended). This James Cameron movie is of the same high caliber as his blockbuster that would appear on the big screen twenty years later. Watching one of the bonus features – Under Pressure: Making The Abyss gave me a greater appreciation for what it took to make this film.

Arguably James Cameron’s most underrated film
This movie blew me away 30 years ago, and still does to this day – even more so with this brand new 4K UHD release. Completely remastered picture and sound for a stellar home theater experience. Rightly includes both the theatrical and special edition of the film. If you’ve never experienced the special edition, this would be a great release to experience it with. It’s definitely a superior, albeit longer version of the film, and really what was originally intended to be released (I believe). Also includes great bonus features and digital copy of the movie, so there’s nothing to be lacking on this release here.

Fantastic 4K release and well worth the wait
I’ve enjoyed this movie ever since it came out. I had a VHS copy, but was holding out for a high-definition release on Blu-Ray. Many years later, when I saw that it was coming on 4K, I knew I had to get it. I wasn’t disappointed. The story revolves around a nuclear sub going down near one of the deepest trenches in the ocean. The Navy enlists the use of an experimental deep-sea oil drilling rig and crew to engage in a rescue/salvage operation. To complicate matters, a hurricane on the surface causes damage to the rig, isolation for the crew and the appearance of a mysterious alien presence from within the trench. The movie is a fantastic adventure with great Oscar-Winning effects and a really gripping story. While all accounts describe the filming process as extremely harrowing and difficult, the end product is really something to see. We also have great performances by Ed Harris and Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio despite the challenges they had to face while filming the movie. I can watch this movie multiple times and with this new 4K remaster, it’s even more enjoyable. There will probably be disagreements on the 4K remaster, but personally, I think they did a fantastic job. I’ve seen a review or two on-line saying that the DNR and smoothing makes the movie look too artificial. In my opinion, it looks extremely realistic. Everything is sharp and clear, and you feel like you’re looking through a window into real events instead of watching a film. To me, that’s what High Definition is supposed to be. Some film buffs like “grain” in their movies, but to each their own, I suppose. The package is nice. It contains 3 discs. First disc is the 4K copy with both Theatrical and Special Edition versions of the film. The second disc is Blu-Ray which again has both versions of the film. I’m very happy that you can see both versions of the film in both formats. Frequently on these 4K releases, that is not the case. Third disc is Blu-Ray with special features including new interviews and footage with director James Cameron as well as archived features from an earlier DVD release.I can’t recommend this package enough. I know that there is already talk about how Cameron’s other recent 4K releases are not as good. This one, however, is very much worth it. You won’t be disappointed.

    GREAT MOVIE
IMPROBALE perhaps IMPOSSIBLE but a pretty good movie non the less.

  9. Robert Edgar

Looks great in 4k but you’ll need to adjust your TV settings as it has shadows in certain scenes. Always enjoyed this movie, especially the extended version.
