Jason Voorhees is cryogenically frozen at the beginning of the 21st century, and is discovered in the 25th century and taken to space.

It is now time for Jason Voorhees to boldly go where no serial killer has gone before in Jason X, a spectacular sci-fi twist on the Friday the 13th franchise brought to life by legendary special effects supervisor Jim Isaac (Gremlins, eXistenZ).
The year is 2455, humanity has left an overly polluted Earth for a new planet they’ve christened Earth II. A crew of scientists on an expedition to Earth I discover a research facility near Camp Crystal Lake where Jason Voorhees’ body has been cryogenically frozen. They decide to bring him back on their spaceship, but in so doing seal their doom! As they depart once again for the furthest stars, the masked maniac awakens, ready to kill again!

Space Jason’s Mayhem Never Looked So Good
“Behold, mere mortals, the future of absurdity! Jason X on 4K from Arrow Video isn’t just a movie; it’s a glorious, neon-soaked, space-slashing fever dream presented with such pristine clarity, you’ll swear you can smell the stale air of the Grendel spaceship. This is the kind of cinematic experience that makes you question reality, and then immediately reach for more popcorn. The 4K transfer itself is a miracle. Every gleam on Uber Jason’s ridiculous new mask, every questionable CGI explosion, every single, perfectly executed, over-the-top kill—like the legendary liquid nitrogen face-smash that looks even more painfully satisfying in high definition, or the poor soul who gets drilled into oblivion—is showcased in eye-popping detail. It’s truly a testament to the fact that even the most wonderfully silly concepts deserve the best possible treatment. And speaking of treatment, Arrow Video has truly outdone themselves with the new packaging! It’s so beautiful, you’ll want to frame it and tell your sophisticated friends it’s abstract art, not the box for a movie where Jason goes to space. It elevates Jason X from a guilty pleasure to a proud, display-worthy testament to cinematic madness. If you love your horror with a generous side of ‘what-the-heck-was-that?!’ and want to see it look absolutely stunning, then grab this—it’s gold, pure cinematic gold… if gold was shaped like a giant, space-faring machete.”

    Worth the upgrade!
I absolutely love this 4K collectors edition of Jason X. This film has never looked and sounded as good as it does in this release. Jason X was the very first film transferred (frame by frame) 🎞️ to digital, making this remaster even cleaner than most. This is packed with features:4K ULTRA HD BLU-RAY LIMITED EDITION CONTENTS4K (2160p) Ultra HD Blu-ray presentation in Dolby Vision (HDR10 compatible)Original lossless stereo and DTS-HD 5.1 surround audio optionsOptional English subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearingIntroduction to the film by actor Kane HodderBrand new audio commentary with film historians Michael Felsher and Steve “Uncle Creepy” BartonArchival audio commentary with writer Todd Farmer and author Peter BrackeArchival audio commentary with director Jim Isaac, writer Todd Farmer and producer Noel CunninghamScoring the Stars, a brand new interview with composer Harry ManfrediniOutta Space: The Making of Jason X, an archival documentary on the making of the film featuring interviews with producers Noel Cunningham and Sean S. NOT. REMOTELY. 4K.
Jason X was the first known movie to use a digital scan of its negative as part of its editing process. The finished cut of the film was rendered out on a computer. This clever and cost-saving move would later be done with Lord of the Rings. The problem here is that the Jason X scan was very low resolution, possibly as low as 1080i, and it’s clear that Arrow only had those very dated materials to work with for this disc. (This is also true of the older Scream Factory blu-ray, which uses the same source.) I don’t think Arrow had a choice here– this could be the best source remaining, for all I know.Jason X has a very “digital cable”-ready look that would be difficult or impossible to remove, and it goes without saying that there is no true “4K” involved with this disc. Video compression is plain to see, even in the New Line logo at the start of the film. The good news is that Arrow did no serious harm to their source and you end up with a choice of appearance for the film, by choosing which disc publisher to go with. For a chipper, lights-on, “Syfy Channel” look with added sharpness in places, go with the Scream Factory blu-ray. For a darker, warmer, more “cinematic” look, go with the Arrow 4K disc. Arrow lowered shadows to make things punchier and skewed away from bright primaries. They also made the image a bit softer in certain wide shots where the limits of the source are especially apparent. While I may sound harsh, there’s really a lot to celebrate here, and that’s reflected in my rating. The movie’s origins on real film help to avoid a lot of the moire patterns and dynamic range issues that would emerge in an all-digital production. And for once, we get a 4K disc with all the features right here— no need to swap out for a “special features” blu ray. And the features are very satisfying! Good making-of featurettes give you a lot of incite into this shoe string production. There’s even a tossed-off intro by Jason, actor Kane Hodder. Finally, the movie itself remains a lot of fun. It’s clear that we’re dealing with pros all around, with stylish lighting, solid fundementals, and good actors who know what movie they’re making. Jason X has a lot going for it and I rate it above some other chapters in the series. As for a recommendation: This Arrow release has one or two more features on it, so if you’re still stuck with a DVD, I’d say go with it. Both modern releases of this film are limited by the source material so I would suggest reading above to decide which copy works best for you.
