Jack Nicholson is unforgettable as private eye Jake Gittes, living off the murky moral climate of sun-baked, pre-war Southern California. Hired by a beautiful socialite (Faye Dunaway) to investigate her husband’s extra-marital affair, Gittes is swept into a maelstrom of double dealings and deadly deceits, uncovering a web of personal and political scandals that come crashing together for one, unforgettable night. Chinatown is a great film, and in 4K very nice….
First copy had to go back as it had digital glitches galore, but vendor replaced quickly. First time seeing Chinatown and thought it was very good, and Jack N was GREAT. PQ and soundtrack were fantastic. Will watch again soon.

Forget it, Jake, it’s Chinatown.
I remember seeing this for the first time a few years back, I didn’t think that much about this movie. I thought it was good, but probably nothing to write about. But after a few years, I decided to watch it again and I found more details about it that I didn’t pick up the first time. The writing, especially, is the best thing that I love about it and the twists and turns that the narrative takes you on.I think this may be my favorite Jack Nicholson film, next to The Shining. I love his character, his style, his resourcefulness, and his slickness in his dialogue. It’s the typical noir archetype that I enjoy watching. Polanski does a good job on recapturing that ’40s noir. Just by the way it’s shot, it will have those nice visually dark scenes. Not too many people talk about him know, but I was also happy to see John Huston, a noir veteran to return to play a character in this movie. The music is by Jerry Goldsmith… I mean, come on, must I say more? It’s and just excellent. I cant listen to it while I drive home from work at night and feel like I’m driving through downtown LA in the ’40s.Chinatown does a great job in entertaining the audience, but at times it has those dark and disturbing moments that end up being very memorable and acts as a testament for great scriptwriting. There memorable moments, memorable lines, and memorable characters that stand the test of time. This film, like so many great ones, is not old… it’s classic. A movie that stands the test of time. And I highly recommend this movie. It’s one of the movies that you MUST watch before you die.

Forget it, Jake! Its Chinatown in 4K!
Such a beautiful film. One of the finest neo-noirs ever made. I like to pretend this is the spiritual cousin, prequel to LA CONFIDENTIAL. Terrific and smooth as the other side of the pillow. Streaming continues to suck it

An Excellent & Profoundly Sad Movie!
Jack is fantastic. I just wish they had tossed in The Two Jakes as an extra.

Great Neo-Noir mystery film with a stellar cast takes you on a wild ride through 1937 Los Angeles.
This 1974 neo-noir american mystery film was directed by Roman Polaski, and can boast of a stellar cast comprising Jack Nicholson as Jake, Faye Dunaway, and John Huston (wrote/directed “The Maltese Falcon”), in the leading roles.Anytime Polaski puts out a movie, you can bet that you’re in store for a wild ride. And this famous film is no different. So, sit down, fasten your safety belt and enjoy the ride!Set in 1937 Los Angeles, Jake Gitttes, a private detective, is hired by Mrs. Mulwray to investigate her husband who she believes is cheating on her. Easy enough, thinks Jake, until he meets the real Mrs. Mulwray, (Dunaway) and realizes that the first Mrs. Mulwray was an impostor. Why? While Jake is pondering this, the real Mr. Mulwray turns up dead. Mulwray’s death starts Jake on a road of family secrets, deceit, and corruption that turns the plot into a murder mystery with Mrs. Mulwray’s father (John Huston) as one of the suspects. I said one because there are many suspects in this film including Mrs. Mulwray, herself, leaving Jake to untangle all the clues pointing in every direction.Five years after Sharon Tate’s (Polanski’s pregnant wife) murder by the Charlie Manson Crew, Polanski made this movie. Fresh in his mind was that wrong people die. Here, his superb direction leads us to wonder about that very thing including the effects of our mistakes. As he investigates, Jake, misunderstands what he sees and in the end is forced to face the consequences of that mistake.Brillant screenplay by Robert Towne, showing the subjugation of the public good by private greed. Great score by Jerry Goldsmith. Ranked number one for film’s about old Los Angeles. One of Cinema’s most famous lines: “Forget it, Jake. It’s Chinatown.”
