RoboCop 2 pits two unstoppable cyborgs against each other in a battle to the death! When Detroit’s descent into chaos is further compounded by a police department strike and a new designer drug called “Nuke,” only RoboCop can stop the mayhem. But in his way are an evil corporation that profits from Motor City crime and a bigger and tougher cyborg with a deadly directive: Take out RoboCop. Containing the latest gadgetry and weaponry as well as the mind of the madman who designed “Nuke,” this new cyborg isn’t just more sophisticated than his predecessor…he’s psychotic and out of control! And it’s going to take everything RoboCop has—maybe even his life—to save Detroit from complete and utter anarchy.

Epic Robo
Here’s the deal, if you ever claimed to be a fan of the original ROBOCOP, then you have to get the 4K Remastered Edition Bluray that just released. I pre-ordered it for $9 but now the price is about $11 but it’s still such a great deal for this release of the film! Let me preface by saying that I watched this film as a kid on VHS and before I became a filmmaker. So watching this (projected on an 8 foot screen) would be my 1st viewing of the film in hi-res and at native 24p (I’ll explain how that’s important). The brilliance of the film is that it starts with a video broadcast of the news that is in the low-fidelity of the TV of old. But then it cuts to the full glory or future Detroit (which apparently was shot in Dallas TX) the sharp, sprawling details of the wide angle lenses shooting low angled city skylines is like the current trend of cutting from 35mm film to spectacular 70mm IMAX (like what Nolan did with THE DARK KNIGHT). It’s like night vs day, small vs big, TV vs cinema. The 4K output to 1080p HD is excellent and it’s as if Verhoeven shot it in IMAX or with that IMAX sensibility of composition (I’m exaggerating a little but it’s to make a point). Now as much as I’ve always loved ROBOCOP, even as a kid I found the ED-209 stop motion to be a little off-putting – it always looked like a scale model and the motion always looked jittery. But here’s where I was surprised the most. At native 24 frames per second and at full HD, ED-209 looks incredibly detailed and menacing. The stop motion is much less distracting than when I watched the film in SD resolution telecined to 29.976 fps. I really think the telecine process is what killed a lot of the model work in ROBOCOP but this Bluray rectifies that. I don’t even think a CG ED-209 would be that much of an improvement and that’s also because Verhoeven and company utilized a full scale model in many shots. Of course there are a handful of stop motion shots that still don’t quite deliver but they’re not critical shots in my opinion. And here’s another revelation I had watching this film as a filmmaker. Blanks and Squibs and performance. ROBOCOP is not just a film that used real full flash blanks and real blood-pack squibs, but it’s a film that went big with explosives. And you can see this in how the actors really squint – not only when they get hit and a squib explodes, but even when they just shoot a gun the muzzle flashes are so big and sparky and smokey that actors squint and flinch with every trigger pull. That makes a huge performance difference to me when compared to all the digital muzzle flashes and blood hits being added to gunshots these days (and I’ve done my share of CG gunshots!).Finally, the sound is decent. The 1st time ED-209 fires his guns they sounded a bit a hollow which worried me. But when Robocop fires his signature 3-burst hand canon, it was nice and bassy and that distinct sound of bad-assery that I remember.I could go on about the merits of the film itself: the tight writing, the memorable lines, the iconic performances, the timeless visuals. But I enjoy conversing about those details over writing about them. And this Bluray really brings out the best in those conversations. So check it out, enjoy it, then call me – we’ll talk then.Oh and seriously, f*** the remake.

Robocop – Great 4K
Enjoyed Robocop when it came out years ago. This 4K upgrade was great to watch being a movie from late 80’s. I found the sound to be just fine. Audiophiles and those with home cinemas might expect more from the 4K version but I think it’s quite good for what it is.

A movie ahead of its time.
One of the best movies of the 1980s. I saw it the day it was released. We were overwhelmed by the action. A movie ahead of its time.

CRUMBAG: This review is for the “Edited for TV” cut of the film, which made me buy this Blu-Ray
So, I already own the director’s cut of RoboCop on Blu-Ray, it’s somewhere deep in my collection, but it’s a rather boring release. Honestly, there’s so little of a difference between the director’s cut and the theatrical cut (they both clock in at about 100 minutes) that I honestly have a hard time differentiating the two. I saw this release in my recommendations based on the fact that awhile back I got Arrow Video’s collector’s edition of “Waterworld” on Blu-Ray (the one with the theatrical cut, TV cut AND the never before seen “Ulysses cut”) and my review for that movie has helped a lot of people so I figured I’d write a review of another Arrow Video release that’s in a similar vein.First of all, the packaging is simply beautiful. It comes with a very thick sleeve with some nice artwork, inside that sleeve is the Blu-Ray (which has reversible artwork, which I almost immediately reversed) which contains two discs, a neatly folded two-sided poster with the new artwork on one side and the original poster artwork on the other side and a rather thick booklet with all sorts of knowledge goodies about the movie. Inside the case for the Blu-Ray are the two discs, but also some photographs and at least one sticker you can put somewhere that says “These Premises Protected By ROBOCOP.” It’s a gorgeous release, it has everything a fan of the original RoboCop could want!On the first disc is the director’s cut of the movie, along with a slew of special features. I have not yet popped this disc into my PlayStation’s Blu-Ray player, yet. I’ve seen both the director’s cut and the theatrical cut many times. But on the second disc is a cut of the movie I’ve not seen since I was about six years old back in 1993 and that’s the “Edited for TV” cut. It’s the version that was broadcast on network television so Dads could show their six year old boys (or girls, I guess, if they’re into this kind of thing) the movie RoboCop without exposing them to all the bad language and gratuitous violence that could very well scar a kid that age if he somehow got his hands on a copy of the uncut version. This cut isn’t radically different from the theatrical version, but it is a lot more fun to watch. I’m watching it in the background as I write this review right now. What I find really fascinating is that a lot of the actors from the movie seemed to come back for extra recording sessions to dub over all their naughty language. Another cool thing is that it’s in 4:3 ratio, beginning with the old words many of us in the 90s remember being on the TV before a movie aired on TV: “This film has been modified from its original version, it has been edited for content and formatted to fit this screen.” So that really adds to the nostalgic experience of watching the “Edited for TV” cut of the movie. One odd thing about the “Edited for TV” cut is that they replaced the word “scumbag” with the word “crumbag,” which isn’t really a word. Anyway, I give this release the full five out of five stars just for including the “Edited for TV” cut of the movie, which they say is in SD, but looks fantastic for being transferred from an old network videotape. I got this Blu-Ray set with a gift card I received for my birthday early in the month and pre-ordered this Blu-Ray right away and waited almost a whole month for it to come in the mail. I got free same day shipping on it because I pre-ordered it early enough. All in all, if you’re a fan of the original RoboCop, you need to pick this one up as soon as possible!

This is (in my opinion) Paul Verhoeven’s masterpiece. Incredible set design, special effects, and make-up (shout-out Stan Winston, the special effects master). Great characters that are acted well. Peter Weller, who spends most of the movie as just a set of lips with the rest of him covered, still gives a great physical performance and makes you feel for Murphy. Excellent themes about ‘rediscovering your humanity’ and ‘the dangers of technology’. Clarence Boddicker is one of the best ‘pure evil’ villains of cinema history, a cruel slime-ball you just love to hate. Also, the musical score is underrated. Overall, huge recommend! I’d definitely buy that for a dollar!

Valutazione venditore: ottimo. My name is Murphy.
