After picking up a traumatized young hitchhiker, five friends find themselves stalked and hunted by a deformed chainsaw-wielding loon
For its inaugural film, Michael Bay’s studio Platinum Dunes brought together scriptwriter Scott Kosar (The Machinist) and director Marcus Nispel (2009’s Friday the 13th) for a grisly update of Tobe Hooper’s classic tale of Texan terror. The result would conquer the 2003 box office, introducing a new generation of genre fans to the franchise.
A group of carefree young adults’ road trip through Texas is cut short when the panic-stricken hitchhiker they’ve picked up shoots herself in the back of their vehicle. Desperate to find help, our heroes are directed to the home of the local Sheriff, but little do they know they are stumbling into the lair of the Hewitts, the most violent family in all of Texas, including their chainsaw-wielding son.
Described by critic Roger Ebert as “vile, ugly and brutal”, 2003’s The Texas Chainsaw Massacre is a boundary pushing, agonizingly violent gorefest masterpiece ready to traumatize and delight horror fans anew with this brand new 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray edition!

Very bold and intense horror and a great DVD
While I fully appreciate and respect the tastes of others, let me just say I have no idea why the original is held in such high regard. It was truly one of the worst films I have ever seen. Nothing happened in it. There was ZERO suspense or excitement, the dialogue was barely audible and it felt like another half of it was missing. I hated it and I am so puzzled why so many people love that film.Granted, back in 1973 it may have been easier to scare audiences and the low-budget nature of the original may have contributed to the ugly look of the film but I see no reason to credit the original director (Tobe Hooper) with any of the film’s so-called qualities. The man’s career fell flat on it’s face soon after and I think his most famous movie was something of a fluke. It would not have succeeded today. Obviously, as I just said, audiences today are exposed to a larger number of movies and can choose and discriminate more easily. There are some who will say the only people who can enjoy this will be degenerate teenagers who don’t know what real horror is. And some who will call the film to glossy. But none of this I find fair criticism.I am, in no way, a fan of Michael Bay or any of his movies. But he had the right idea in keeping the budget very low for this movie ($8 million) and seems to be more skilled in packaging and producing than directing. The film is not ‘glossy’ or ‘clean’. The equipment use to make the film is more sophisticated than that on the original but this is not ‘The Rock’ or ‘Armageddon’ and there are no hundred-shots-in-a-second and flashy camera tricks. They all tried their best to pull of a nervous, raw horror film that stands on it’s own and I think they have. This was sooooooo much better than the first. The characters actually HAVE character this time. I got on their side, I got involved in the action (yes, there is action this time, and a LOT of it) and the acting was done well. Plus Jessica Biel is VERY hot.So many new dimensions and situations occur is this remake that elevates to something a zillion times what the original was. Don’t automatically think that because Michael Bay is the producer that it’s going to be some kind of sanitised and fashion-shoot Hollywood production. It is still a very edgy and intense film. It’s rare that a Hollywood film manages to horrify and offend these days, so I’m very glad the new TCM went for a hard R-rating. The tone is so filthy and depraved that you will definitely need to shower soon afterwards. THAT’S how close you get to the action.Even the character of Thomas ‘Leatherface’ Hewitt has a lot more to do this time. He’s not quite Jason Voorhees but he’s still an incredibly mean bad guy you’d NEVER want to mess with or come within 10 miles of. And in case you’re wondering, he’s played by the same dude who played Butterfinger, the big, dumb blonde guy from Hudson Hawk. Only this time he’s not so cuddly. Not since 8mm almost 5 years ago have I seen a film where the bad guys (there’s more than one) are nothing but the blackest of all evil. R. Lee Ermey was terrific (as usual) as the disgusting Sheriff and any fans of him should only expect the most badass of performances.Second to Dawn of the Dead (and tying with House of 1000 Corpses) this is one of the best horror movies I have seen in a long time. The Platinum Series DVD is just awesome. The 1.85:1 anamorphic picture is superb and the Dolby 6.1/DTS ES soundtracks are incredible. You’ll really think Leatherface is chainsawing his way into YOUR living room. There are also a massive load of interesting extras including a 75-minute documentary, deleted scenes, a documentary on serial killer Ed Gein (who was ‘supposedly the inspiration for the original but Tobe Hooper denied these rumors) and screen test footage. The packaging is awesome with a metal plate stuck on the front cover and ‘crime scene’ photos in a little envelope tucked into back. It completes a great package of a great DVD of a great movie. Buy it!!!

A masterpiece in it’s own way
I can’t say enough good things about this film. For me personally, this is my favorite in the TCM franchise and one of my favorite films of all time. I’ve seen it countless times at this point and am still horrified, entertained and surprised by new details every time. The score is underrated and if anything my main critique is that there are too many amazing shots that the the film should have been a little longer so we had more camera time to take in all of the amazing details.

Excellent
I have always loved the TCM franchise. The fact it’s bounced from one person to another is sad. Many doing an awful job with it. This is one of my favorites and one of the best and first of the now so common remakes/reboots. The production of this movie is unreal. The color and feel carries throughout. There is a nasty, dinge to this film. The acting is incredible. The sheriff is one of the creepiest characters to me ever and of course Leatherface. There are a couple bad scenes in this movie. One being the scene with the man running though the endless sheets hanging to dry. It is comical and lead to so many jokes. Also the scene where Erin stabs her friend to end his suffering . Just too much drama that didn’t seem to fit There are also scenes in that movie that are phenomenal. The first time I watched this I was pretty frozen throughout the movie and I was locked in. Amazing acting and characters. I’d also say with all the greens, browns, and yellows chosen this film is very visual in that it creates a mood and a feel by using certain colors. Everything in it just feels dirty. Love this movie and I always recommend it

Think twice before picking up a hitchhiker.
Let me start by saying that when I review a film, I like to do so without compairing to others. To read exactly what I think of the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre 1974 version, feel free to read my review on that film. I’m not going to compair, I’ll just tell you what I feel with this film on it’s own merit. Lets begin…The package Meter: 5 Stars! The case for the platinum series is the way to go. You get two discs that are nice and secure, they hold well in the case and don’t pop out. The discs are also easy to get in and out which saves a lot of headache. You get a beautiful cover that opens up and which looks like the long bar/blade of Leatherfaces chainsaw! Now what could be more cool then that! You also get a envelope which contains some really cool photos from what I can see in pictures. I have yet to break the red tape though on mine and open it because I want to keep it sealed. Knowing me I will buy a second copy of this gem of a film so I can open one. One disc contains the movie and the other contains a lot of extras. I just love the way this package looks, Leatherface holding his chainsaw with a errie read glow behind him. Very well done, I’m very happy with this package.Spook Meter: 4 stars! This film is very well done and very scary. It built things up at a very nice pace, not to rushed and not to slow. There is some really great scenes in this film that will make your heart race and is sure to please any serious horror fan. There are some really cool chase parts with Leatherface running with his chainsaw that made me leap with joy! I don’t like to give much away at all in my reviews. I will say this, one part that will really leave a impression on you is the whole scene with the hitchhiker in the van. I will not say more then that, but it’s just freaky. The actors and actresses did a fine job but it’s the Sheriff and Leatherface is what brings this all together, they really made this film click. The Sheriff is just plain insane and the guy who played Leatherface really did a very fine job at bringing him to life. The way he moves in this film with the chainsaw in hand is very creepy and gives a really nice touch to this film. I felt the kids could have done a bit better, but they did well acting. I thought there could have used a few more screams throughout the film to make the terror come to life a bit more, but overall it still was scary.Gore Meter: 4 Stars There is a lot of gore in this film, but not super extream. The blood and gore I thought was very well done and it looked very real. I advise that you watch this film only if you can deal with some pretty intense scenes though because this does have it. Not as extream as my 5 star rating but still not at all for the faint of heart when it comes to gore.Profanity Meter: 5 Strikes A ton of language throughout this film and as I have said in past reviews, this is always a dissapointment to me. I find that excessive profanity actually takes away from the overall enjoyment.Sexual Meter: 1 Strikes Nothing sexual here. There are a few comments here and there that I thought were in poor taste, but other then that there is nothing sexual/visual that happens in the film.Final Thoughts: This film is scary! I have seen more scary and less scary but overall I loved this film! It will leave a impression on you and you will come away feeling very impressed! I had to give this 4 stars overall for a few things that brought the the overall enjoyment down slightly for me personally as a viewer. If you love horror though, you will be very pleased to add this gem to your collection, I know I was.I hope they continue to make more chainsaw films. Leatherface rocks!!

TV watched on: 32″ LG 32LD490 (HD READY TV)Blu Ray player: LG BD555 Blu Ray Player (Connected with a HDMI cable)The film itself is incredible, a very worthy remake of a horror classic and 10 times better then most of the horror remakes made after it. Anyway, less about the movie and more about the Blu Ray. This film looks stunning in 1080p in contrast to 480p on the DVD version(which I also have). Every detail is pin sharp, including facial shots where you can see the finest details (e.g. hair, sweat etc.). Landscape shots look excellent and vivid. All in all the picture looks great. Horror films are perfect for Blu Ray, it helps enhance the experience a horror film gives the viewer, with the gruesome details more sharper then on a DVD and the terrifying sounds much more clearer too, it makes you feel like you’re right inside the movie. All in all a great film to experience on Blu Ray and with a reasonable price, it is most definitely worth buying.
