An elite mercenary is killed, but comes back from Hell as a reluctant soldier of the Devil.
BORN IN DARKNESS. SWORN TO JUSTICE.
From the producers of Blade and The Crow comes Spawn, a dark, action-packed supernatural thriller that redefined the comic book movie with cutting-edge visual effects and a haunting origin story of vengeance, damnation, and redemption.
Al Simmons (Michael Jai White) is a top-tier Black Ops agent, ruthlessly efficient and fiercely loyal–until he’s doublecrossed and executed by his commanding officer, Jason Wynn (Martin Sheen). But Simmons is resurrected by the devil Malebolgia and becomes Spawn, a demonic antihero with terrifying powers. Caught between Earth and the Underworld, Spawn is determined to exact bloody revenge on Wynn, and must choose to serve his new infernal masters or fight for the salvation of his immortal soul.
Based on Todd McFarlane’s groundbreaking comic, Spawn is a visually explosive cult classic that blends horror, action, and gothic fantasy, available for the first time in a fiery new 4K restoration that breathes new life into Hell’s most iconic warrior.

Spawn Director’s Cut 4+ minutes extra
Sci-fi Fantasy from 1997 based on the comic book series. One of my favorites from this time period. The original was 1hr 34min and this director’s cut is 1hr 38min.Michael Jai White is Spawn! John Leguizamo is the halarious evil clown and satan’s right hand man outside of hell on the surface.Glad I bought it to add to my Blu-ray Sci-fi Fantasy collection in the 1990s era. I’m actually surprised a remake of Spawn hadn’t been done with today’s CGI effects capabilities. It would definitely be worth seeing! I’d buy that 4k Blu-ray when it released and watch it at the theater too…

One of the best at the time
From 1995 to 1998 comics had a great time. We were blessed with wonderful comic books like xmen, spiderman, gen 13, and Spawn. For me, Spawn was at the top of my list cause, it was dark, twisted and deeply imaginative. Then came the spawn movie and this changed the world forever. We no longer wanted to see our heroes on paper: we wanted to see them on screen. I think this caused comics to sure die out, and the guys that were reading the comics, wanted to put these characters on the big screen. Spawn was great, but there was something left out of the translation for me, probably because it wasn’t r rated. It had to be pg13 to reach a broader audience, but it still worked. But we were not ready for that yet. Blade is the only comic movie that took that r rated risk and it worked. But now that spawn has been introduced to the world cinematicly and animated, mcfarlane should try again in rated r. I would love a retelling or a sequel. Just make sure its a gritty as the comic book.

It’s okay
There’s parts I like, and parts I dislike. There are some great special effects scenes… I still like the cape, even though it looks dated. All the parts in hell look really dated. The movie captures some… but not all…of the essential ingredients of the comic book SPAWN. Watching it now (2014), you get the sense that the scope of the movie is very limited due to the budget.I think a much better SPAWN movie could be done now that the technology has vastly improved. But is SPAWN a flawed vehicle to begin with? I went back and read some of the original run… it didn’t really grab me a a reader. I read some of the McFarlane work on Spiderman… and that was good back then (I read it back in the 90s). Sure some if was dark, but it still was a nice take on the iconic character. When McF went on and created SPAWN… it seemed like the reader would get the best of both worlds. Something edgy, yet still mainstream. SPAWN ended up being way too dark.In the film world… I think if they focused on making SPAWN a combination of a Batman/Spiderman-type of character… that it could be really popular. He could be as popular as any of those other mainstream characters. The problem is that McFarlane seems to want to go in a darker direction with his character, and this limits the potential of the property. I think SEVEN is a phenomenal movie… one of the best… but taking SPAWN in this direction does a disservice to the potential of the character.
